THE HIDDEN RISKS OF ONE-WHEEL ELECTRIC SKATEBOARDS: A PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEY'S PERSPECTIVE

Posted by Lauren Beck | Apr 20, 2024 | 0 Comments

INTRODUCTION:

As personal injury attorneys, we are always vigilant about emerging trends and technologies that could pose risks to public safety.  One such innovation that has gained popularity in recent years in the one-wheel electric skateboard.  While these futuristic devices may seem like a convenient and fun mode of transportation, they come with a host of hidden dangers that riders and pedestrians alike should be aware of.

UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS:

One-wheel electric skateboards, also known as "Onewheels," are self-balancing electric skateboards that feature a single large wheel in the center.  Riders control their speed and direction by leaning forward or backward, similar to riding a snowboard.  While they offer a thrilling ride experience, they also present several inherent risks that can lead to serious injuries.

  1. Loss of Balance:   Unlike traditional skateboards or electric scooters with multiple wheels for stability, one-wheel electric skateboards rely entirely on the rider's ability to balance.  This makes them particularly challenging to master, especially for inexperienced riders or those attempting to navigate uneven terrain.

     2. High-Speed Collisions: One-wheel electric skateboards can reach speeds up to 20 miles per hour or more.  When traveling at such velocities, even a minor loss of control can result in a high-speed collisions with obstacles, pedestrians, or other vehicles, leading to severe injuries for both the rider and anyone in their path.

     3. Uneven Surfaces:  While these devices are designed to handle a variety of terrains, they are not immune to the hazards posed by uneven surfaces, potholes or debris.  A sudden jolt or unexpected obstacle can cause the rider to lose balance and suffer a fall, potentially resulting in fractures, head, head injuries or worse.

     4. Limited Visibility:  Unlike cyclists or motorists who sit at a higher vantage point, riders one-wheel electric skateboards have a lower profile, making them less visible to other road users. This increases the risk of collisions, especially at intersections or in crowded urban environments where visibility is already compromised.

 LEGAL IMPLICATIONS:

From a legal standpoint, accidents involving one-wheel electric skateboards can be complex and challenging to navigate. Determining liability may involve assessing factors such as rider negligence, defective equipment, or the actions of other parties involved.  As a personal injury attorney, my role is to advocate for the rights of those injured in such accidents and seek fair compensation for their damages.

 CONCLUSION:

While one-wheel electric skateboards offer an exciting and eco-friendly alternative to traditional modes of transportation, they also come with inherent risks that should not be underestimated.  As a personal injury attorney, I urger riders to exercise caution, wear appropriate safety gear, and familiarize themselves with local regulations governing the use of these devices.  By staying informed and taking proactive measures to mitigate risks, we can all contribute to safer streets and fewer preventable accidents.  If you or loved one has been injured in a one-wheeled electric skateboard accident, do not hesitate to reach out to me to seek legal guidance to protect your rights and pursue justice.
