Bicycle Safety and the Risk of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in Connecticut

Posted by Lauren Beck | Jun 30, 2025 | 0 Comments

As the weather warms up in Connecticut, more people are turning to bicycles—for commuting, exercise, or simply enjoying the outdoors. While cycling offers many benefits, it also carries serious risks, especially when it comes to head injuries. One of the most devastating outcomes of a bicycle accident is a traumatic brain injury (TBI)—an injury that can have lifelong consequences.

What Is a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

A TBI occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. This can happen even without direct contact to the skull. For example, if a cyclist is thrown from their bike and their head whips back suddenly, the brain can slam against the inside of the skull, causing a mild, moderate, or severe TBI.

Symptoms may not always appear immediately, especially in mild TBIs like concussions, which makes them particularly dangerous and often overlooked.

Common Bicycle Accident Scenarios That Can Cause TBI • Collisions with motor vehicles • Falls from a bike due to poor road conditions (potholes, debris, wet pavement) • Being doored by a parked car • Striking a curb, tree, or pole at speed • Defective bicycle components or improper helmet use

If you or a loved one was struck while riding a bicycle and suffered any type of head trauma please call my office for a free consultation.
