Connecticut drivers should stay in the far-left lane only when passing another vehicle or when an exception applies.
Effective October 1, 2026, Connecticut's new left-lane law prohibits motorists from driving in the extreme left lane of a divided highway with three or more lanes traveling in the same direction, unless they are passing another vehicle or an exception applies.
The law permits drivers to use the far-left lane in certain circumstances, including when passing another vehicle, following a police officer's direction, entering or exiting from the left, responding as an emergency vehicle, performing highway work, or when traffic congestion requires its use.
A violation is an infraction carrying an $88 fine.
The purpose of the new law is to encourage drivers to “Pass Left. Drive Right.” Staying to the right when not passing can help improve traffic flow and reduce unnecessary lane changes and potentially dangerous driving behavior.
For Connecticut motorists, the message is simple: Use the left lane to pass—not to cruise.
